There are reports making the rounds that a Nollywood star was left in the lurch overseas recently after her husband-to-be failed to show up on their wedding day.We don’t know how true this is, neither do we know the actress in question, but from the descriptions from gossip blogger Stella Dimokokorkus, it could be Genevieve Nnaji.Again, this is unconfirmed and there are no facts whatsoever to substantiate Stella’s claims but then the descriptions fit like hand in glove.According to the report, the movie star wanted a hush-hush wedding in Milan, a ceremony devoid of all the glitz and glamour befitting of a star in her mould. But this unusualness got the family of the guy in question disturbed to the point where the groom’s father reportedly planned not to attend had the wedding held. The gossip source said she practically called the shots and her demands were so much as she asked that the wedding ceremony be held secretly.Stella Dimokokorkus wrote of the situation:“[The actress’] demands were about the wedding cos she wanted to code it. She didnt want his parents to tell or invite other people. So his mum had to stomach the whole thing. Even his dad refused to attend (that is if it had held) because he doesn’t understand why the wedding of his son should be coded…So essentially she was calling the shots and no one was supposedly happy about it…“Whilst no one liked the Secrecy involved, tickets were bought, his mum still travelled to the location of where it was supposed to hold but wedding didn’t hold. Lover boy is currently in Amsterdam cooling his head while she is attending the TIFF in Canada (for her movie?). Well both were whispered to be in these locations as at two days ago and it is possible they might have travelled somewhere else.“The wedding cancellation was two weeks ago, however the whisperers didnot say if the relationship has been called off as well. Note that I don’t know how long they dated but it seems the proposal was this year and was the ring the actress flaunted one time on her IG handle that went viral,Remember? You should remember cos her name always rings a bell even though she does not own a Magazine.”It is important to reiterate that none of this is confirmed, neither do we have any special proof to substantiate our gossip blogger here but this is disturbing nonetheless. Now, assuming for a minute that Genevieve Nnaji was actually involved in this, are her claims valid when she demands that a private wedding ceremony be held?Could it be that she is tired of the prying eyes of the media and the caustic criticisms from entertainment and lifestyle editors? What other reasons could have informed our star’s actions here if indeed she conditioned her husband-to-be that much?Ladies, African ladies especially, are known to relish the moments in an elaborate, well-publicized wedding which is why anyone would find it interesting that a lady wants things kept on the low, especially as it concerns a wedding celebration.Fine she took it to Milan, as reported, but did she have to go the extra mile and demand that affairs be kept under wraps? At 37, she is not any less desirable and it is important to add that the mother of one is most likely still getting calls and requests for dates from teeming admirers. But as is customarily appropriate with Africans, our sultry screen star is expected to settle down at some point otherwise she is deemed an underachiever in many quarters. And time is already far spent for many a lady in her age bracket would be desperate to make it happen anyway possible today, whatever the odds. But the report says she is still “calling the shots”, which is fairly impressivebecause if anything it teaches women in society to embrace independence as marriage is not and will never be a benchmark to ascertain true success.True success comes from within. Pure success is never contingent on anyone else as much as it comes from an individual. It comes from a successful career, a strong relationship with the most high, a life of truth, selflessness, moral excellence, love and greatfulness, among other things. We must rise beyond the illogical point of putting pressure on women in society today as far as marriage is concerned as more often than not this is what leads to many broken marriages. And as long as the most premium is placed on people hurriedly getting married whether or not their bond is deep enough for such, we will continue to have issues hovering around divorce and domestic violence. Not to support any lady making outrageous demands and whatnot, but theman is not always correct. And for the record, single women are just as successful as their married counterparts, there are no specific points that say otherwise. It’s all a thing of the mind, an African thing, a Nigerian practice that is largely unfounded.
